Module 5: Grammar & Precision

Precision Control

Grammar & Precision Upgrade

Train to identify and ruthlessly eliminate the micro-errors that drag down rubric scores. Master tense consistency, lexical collocations, and the total eradication of redundancy.

Lesson 1: Sentence Clarity & Run-Ons

Objective: Identify and eliminate overly long, mis-punctuated sentence structures.

A 'Run-On' sentence occurs when multiple independent thoughts are fused together without proper conjunctions or punctuation. Candidates frequently assume that writing massive, 50-word sentences proves their 'fluency'. In reality, human raters actively penalize sentences that force the reader to stop and re-read for comprehension. If a sentence cannot be read clearly 'in one breath', it must be heavily simplified.
Clarity Diagnostic

FAULTY SENTENCE (The Fluency Trap):The government should build more hospitals in rural areas because people have to drive too far causing a lot of deaths in emergencies and also doctors don't want to work there because the pay is low so the government needs to offer them more money.CORRECTED PRECISION (The High Score):The government must construct additional hospitals in rural regions to prevent emergency-related fatalities caused by excessive transit times. Furthermore, to incentivize medical professionals to relocate to these areas, federal subsidies must be introduced to increase baseline salaries.

Precision Analysis

1. Why did the 'Faulty Sentence' receive a low grammar score?

2. How did the 'Corrected Precision' version solve the problem?

Lesson 2: Verb Tense & Consistency

Objective: Maintain absolute temporal control throughout your paragraph.

Tense inconsistency is a primary marker of a CLB 6/7 writer. If you start a paragraph in the past tense to describe a historical event, suddenly shift to the present tense, and then jump to a conditional tense without logical reason, the scoring algorithm notes a systemic lack of grammatical command.
Consistency Correction

INCONSISTENT SHIFTING:Ten years ago, the city decides to build a new transit line. It was a massive project that costs millions of dollars. If they finish it on time, the citizens would have been very happy. Today, the trains are running but nobody used them because the tickets are too expensive.UNIFIED TEMPORAL CONTROL:Ten years ago, the city decided to construct a new transit line. It was a massive project that cost millions of dollars. Had it been completed on schedule, the citizens would have been highly satisfied. Today, although the trains are operational, ridership remains low due to exorbitant ticket prices.

Precision Analysis

1. Identify the tense error in the very first faulty sentence: 'Ten years ago, the city decides...'

2. What makes the conditional shift 'Had it been completed...' in the corrected version appropriate?

Lesson 3: Word Choice & Collocation Precision

Objective: Eliminate awkward phrasing and direct translation errors.

A 'collocation' is a set of words that naturally go together in English. For example, in English we 'make a mistake', we do not 'do a mistake'. Many test-takers lose points not because their vocabulary is simple, but because they combine advanced words incorrectly (awkward phrasing).
Collocation Upgrade Drill

AWKWARD PHRASING (Direct Translation):To solve the traffic problem, the government must make a research about the roads. They should give an attention to the bridge because it is getting old.PRECISION COLLOCATION (Native Flow):To solve the structural traffic crisis, the government must conduct research regarding the highway infrastructure. Furthermore, they must pay close attention to the central bridge, as it is rapidly deteriorating.

Precision Analysis

1. Why is 'make a research' marked as a severe vocabulary error?

2. Why is 'pay close attention' superior to 'give an attention'?

Lesson 4: Article & Preposition Accuracy

Objective: Master the subtle micro-errors that reduce perceived language proficiency.

Articles (a, an, the) and prepositions (in, on, at, about) are the 'micro-glue' of English. Even if your argument is brilliant, dropping articles or using the wrong preposition loudly signals to the rater that your English is not at a Band 9 level.
Micro-Error Scan

MICRO-ERROR PATTERNS (Band 6/7):We arrived to the airport in the exactly 5 AM. I was very angry on the airline because they lost my luggage. I demanded for a refund.NATIVE ACCURACY (Band 9):We arrived at the airport at exactly 5:00 AM. I was understandably furious with the airline for losing my luggage, and I formally demanded a full refund.

Precision Analysis

1. Why is 'arrived to the airport' incorrect?

2. Why is 'demanded for a refund' mathematically wrong?

Lesson 5: Redundancy & Word Economy

Objective: Achieve 'Word Economy' by ruthlessly eliminating padding and useless descriptors.

There is a massive difference between 'complex writing' and 'wordy writing'. Wordiness occurs when you use 15 words to explain a 5-word concept. Advanced writers employ strict Word Economy: every single word must pull its own weight.
Redundancy Elimination

INEFFICIENT WORDINESS (~45 words):Due to the fact that the company is currently experiencing a situation where they have a lack of financial money, they have made the final decision to basically tell all the workers to go home and stop working for the time being.ECONOMIC PRECISION (~20 words):Because the corporation is currently experiencing severe financial deficits, management has decided to temporarily suspend all non-essential personnel.

Precision Analysis

1. Identify the redundant pairs in the inefficient version.

2. How does the economic version handle 'tell all the workers to go home'?

Lesson 6: Error Pattern Diagnostic Drill

Objective: Synthesize all precision skills in a mixed-error diagnostic block.

In the exam, errors do not happen in isolation. You will likely combine a run-on sentence with an incorrect preposition and a bad collocation. You must train to spot these compound errors simultaneously during your final 2-minute review.
Compound Error Correction Assessment

MIXED ERROR TEXT:Despite of the weather being bad, a large amount of peoples decided to participate into the outdoor marathon. This shows that fitness is very popular nowadays today. If the city cancel the event, everyone will be very disappointed on the mayor.FULLY REPAIRED DIAGNOSTIC (CLB 9+):Despite the severe weather, a large number of citizens chose to participate in the outdoor marathon, actively demonstrating the current popularity of community fitness. Had the city canceled the event, the public would have been profoundly disappointed with the municipal government.

Precision Analysis

1. What is the primary error in 'Despite of the weather being bad'?

2. Why was 'a large amount of peoples' corrected to 'a large number of citizens'?

Grammar Control Diagnostic
